Description: A 270m², 2-storey loft in a historic chocolate factory in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. Except for the existing exterior walls and two internal columns, the space was completely open. As a first gesture, the space was roughly divided into two halves: sleeping/bathing in one area, and cooking/living/entertaining in another. A "service element" was placed in the center to support the bathing, storage and cooking functions. Clad with dark wood veneer, this element (with its distinctive Z-form in plan) further subdivides the surrounding space. Instead of the typical division of rooms / corridors, the spaces around the central element are more open and continuous. Separated by sliding walls with varying levels of opactiy / transparency, the "rooms" can easily change in size and function. The master and guest bedrooms can serve together as one large master bedroom, or two rooms can be created by closing the sliding walls between them. The bathing area faces directly onto the master bedroom, or can be closed with a translucent panel. An acoustic curtain can be drawn in the main space to create separate Media Room and Living Room. The open space adjacent to the stair can also serve as an impromptu bar. Colors and materials - shades of dark / light, and soft / hard - also differentiate the new inner core and the pre-existing outer shell. The inner core is stepped 20cm to reinforce the feeling of being in a different space without reverting to the traditional demarcation of door or threshold. A horizontal shaft weaves through the space overhead, roughly along the dividing line between living/sleeping areas, through which pass technical services. In addition to allowing more freedom for different activities to take place, the open spaces formed by the central element preserve the loft character of the building.

More...:  Ein „Dienstelement“ wurde in die Mitte gestellt, um das Baden, Aufbewahren und die Kochfunktionen zu unterstützen. Dieses ist verkleidet mit dunklem Holzfurnier und unterteilt die umgebende Freifläche in „Räume“. Statt der typischen Teilung von Zimmer und Flur ist die Freifläche um das zentrale Element offener und durchgehend gestaltet. Es ist möglich die „Räume” mit Hilfe von Schiebetüren, in verschiedenen Transparenzstärken, leicht in Größe und Funktion zu variieren. Das Haupt- und Gästeschlafzimmer können zu einem großen Schlafraum zusammengelegt werden. Schließt man die beiden Schiebetüren zwischen den Räumen erhält man zwei separate Räume. Das Bad ist direkt mit dem Hauptschlafzimmer verbunden, kann jedoch durch ein lichtdurchlässiges Paneel separiert werden. Durch einen akustischen Vorhang ist es möglich die Hauptfläche in einen Medien- und Wohnraum umzuwandeln. Die zur Treppe hin angrenzende offene Fläche kann als improviesierte Bar genutzt werden. Farben sowie Materialien – Abstufungen von hell/ dunkel und weich/hart – differenzieren den neuen inneren Kern und die präexistente äußere Schale. Der innere Kern ist um 20 cm angehoben, um den Eindruck zu erwecken man befände sich in einem anderen Raum ohne auf die traditionellen Abgrenzungen wie Türen oder Schwellen zurückgreifen zu müssen. Ein horizontaler Schacht, durch welchen die technischen Leitungen laufen, schlängelt sich entlang der Decke, er bildet eine Art Grenzlinie zwischen Schlaf- und Wohnraum. Im Hinblick auf mehr Freiheit für verschiedene Aktivitäten bewahrt der offene Bereich, geformt durch das zentrale Element, den Loftcharakter des Gebäudes.
